From Dancing Shoes to A High School Diploma Essay

I have always believed that something great was destined for each and everyone of us. No matter how hard we try, there are still certain things that we take for granted. Sometimes, these little things are the ones that matter in the end. From being the average student to the extraordinary dancer, these experiences have definitely helped shape who I am today. I am originally from Korea, where I finished my elementary and high school. School has always been a challenge for me, making me finish the elementary level with just average grades. I did not belong to the group of students who brought honor and pride to their parents because of exemplary performance in school. I was just an average student who would sit in class and listen to the lessons taught by the teachers. Middle school became another challenge for me. I was growing older, and wanted so much to fit in the crowd. I became more interested in hanging out with my friends rather than attending school and preparing myself for the real world. My grades started to deteriorate, and my teachers and my parents were alarmed with what was happening to me. I became clueless with what my goals in life should be. All I know was that I wanted to enjoy life and be with my friends. While I was still able to pass middle school, my grades were nowhere near impressive. I was still my old self–uninterested with school and dependent on what my peers would say. One day, a high school student approached me and asked me to join the dance club. I guess all of those dancing stints during parties paid off. I was accepted and was forever changed by my experience in the club. The few sessions I had with the dance club made me realize a lot of things. I learned the basics of hard work and determination. Dancing became a big part of my life. Whether it was daytime or night time, I was always dancing. Unfortunately, my grades were greatly affected again. They started to deteriorate, and this prompted my teachers to open my eyes to reality. My homeroom teacher constantly explained to me that dancing is a good hobby, for I am able to express myself creatively. However, she told me that I should pay more attention to my studies so that I may be able to enter a reputable high school. I ignored these statements and went on with the kind of lifestyle I was used to. The last year of middle school meant that we had to apply in different high schools. Together with my friends and peers, we started applying to the prestigious schools in our district. My friends were able to get accepted in some of these schools, unfortunately, I was not one of them. My unimpressive school transcript prevented me from being accepted in a reputable school. In short, I was rejected most of the time. My homeroom teacher became concerned with the situation, so she suggested that we enter a dance competition in order to get extra curricular points that may be included in our application forms. My friends and I thought that this was our last option to prove ourselves, so we decided to enter the said competition. I could definitely say that we gave our best, practicing until our bones and muscles hurt. Unfortunately, we were defeated in the preliminaries. I was greatly affected with the decision, making me cry my heart out. After all the hard work and dedication I gave for this competition, still it was not enough. I decided to live a new life from then on. Eventually, I was able to attend a high school away from my friends and family. I became determined more than ever to study hard and be someone. My lack of knowledge in middle school has made high school difficult for me. Being accepted in a reputable university was the hardest part of all. My hopes and dreams of actually succeeding in life started to diminish. With these in mind, I decided to learn a particular skill, no matter how difficult it was. Currently, I am in the United States hoping to somehow fulfill my dreams and aspirations. I am determined more than ever to study and learn to the best of my abilities, and avoid the mistakes that I have committed in the past. I learned that work and play should be balanced, and that there should be a set of priorities that should not be taken for granted. I am now aware that everything happens for a reason and that no time should be wasted. As I look back and recall my days in middle school, I cannot help but be disappointed in myself. If only I can go back in time and correct the mistakes I have committed in the past, I would do it. I have realized that opportunity only knocks once in a lifetime, and you can never go back to redo the things of the past. The said experience has helped me rise up and always be thankful that I am given another chance to fix my life.

Everlast – What Its Like

The song I chose is called â€Å"What its like† by Everlast. The piece was written by Erik Schrody, an Irish-American singer/rapper born on August 18, 1969. The first time I listed to this song, it really grabbed my attention. The song tells about circumstantial extremities in life and how people react to them. It first tells of a bum, begging for money at a liquor store. The song tells of this man begging for money with shame in his eyes, suggesting how hard it is for him to do. Maybe if there was any other way, he would have avoided the situation. Second, it tells of an adolescent teenage girl that becomes pregnant in a relationship she thought would last forever. It ends up that the young man stops talking to her and abandons her completely. She is left to make a choice and decided to get an abortion. The people give her â€Å"static† as she comes through the door at the clinic, there was tension in the decision that she made, people degraded her by calling her horrible things for the decision that she makes. How could they know her pain? Can they judge her? The last character is Max. Max has problems with drugs and alcohol and seems to have violent friends as well. Max is the one I felt most like judging because he hangs out with drug dealers and gets smashed drunk all the time and thus wise neglects his responsibilities as a dad and a husband. He ends up losing his temper one night and gets in a gun brawl and gets shot and dies. His problems are then left for his grief stricken family to deal with. The song touches heavily on not judging someone until you are fully aware of their circumstances. In my opinion, the single best line in the song is, â€Å"god forbid you ever had to walk a mile in their shoes, then you might know what it’s like to have to choose. The song is written in a type of blues, hip-hop soft rock. It’s really a unique style that Everlast created after having been involved so much in so many different kinds of music. There are only two guitars and a drum set used in this song. It is interesting to note that a majority of the song is played D Minor, which is said to be the single saddest note in the musical spectrum. (see wikipidia: D Minor) There have yet to be any remakes of the song. The song is still played on the radio today and seems to attract attention where ever it is played.

MUSIC AS AN EFFECTIVE PLATFORM FOR PROTEST Essay

MUSIC AS AN EFFECTIVE PLATFORM FOR PROTEST - Essay Example Protest Music has always effectively captured the mood of the era and every movement in the US has been accompanied by protest songs whether it was the slave movement, anti-war sentiment or the feminist movement. It is however in the 1960s during the Vietnam War that Protest Music came forward as a major jolt to the government and the public. It was singers such as John Lennon with his ‘Give Peace a Chance’ who created uproar within the music industry and the general public. Their songs became mantras for the public. Later Hip Hop came forward to express the repressed anger of the Black Americans towards the biased attitude of the government towards their race. Hip Hop became so popular that it was warmly accepted by even White Americans who felt for the cause of these people. In this paper, we attempt to understand how music can be an effective platform of protest. Some believe that protest music is nothing more than propaganda aimed to turn the public against the government. They believe that protest music can gain nothing through its unorganized way of dealing with community issues. On the other hand, there are some who believe that protest music creates a sense of bonding and awakening within the public. The public understand that they are not alone and once they join together through music, they can attain a lot. The Hutchson Family Singers were the first protest singers in the history of US that came forward during the mid 19th century. They took up various causes that the public was suffering with such as abolition of slavery, women suffering, the temperance movement etc. The Hutchson Family created a name for themselves with songs like ‘Escape at Sunset’ that focused on the issue of slavery. The Hutchson Family also sang for the President, John Tyler and became friends with Abraham Lincoln. It was the Hutchson Family Singer who inspired many with their protest songs such as Woodie

Implications Of Business Ethics For Quality Management Essay

Implications Of Business Ethics For Quality Management - Essay Example Most managers are aware of the need to re-evaluate their priorities and approaches to conducting business (Heller, 2006) so that most adopt ways to improve "corporate image" and business standards with the understanding of the origins of ethical thought with reference to codes of ethics (McNamee, 1992). 2. Evaluating the self for improvement and development could mean combining personal care with control of processes to achieve the highest level of quality in business and management (Fisscher and Nijhof, 2005). In this process, the manager must define his own and the organization's strengths, detail weaknesses, ready to seize opportunities and acknowledge threat with preparation. Once again, Heller (2006) emphasized agility in this aspect. Personally, I may include personal and academic achievements and personal attitudes such as boldness, hardworking, honesty and integrity as my strength. These attributes cannot be easily taken away from me and is a part of me that goes where I am. Therefore, knowledge and skills gained, all the things I have undergone while learning, my experiences and the values I have cultivated and maintained are my own treasures that I can use in present and future endeavors. Weaknesses include impatience due to age as most youths like me crave for a fast, active lifestyle and working environment. Results are wanted immediately, which could be futile at times, but can cause anxiety even in a short time basis. Another weakness could be a lack of work environment political knowledge. As most organizations have a socio-political atmosphere, my lack of exposure may cause work-related stress and conflicts with inter-personal relations. Opportunities include career expansion and endless possibilities, self-improvement, career specialization, access to more and specialized data and information.

Assignment2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Assignment2 - Essay Example It would have been more appropriate if the memo had an introductory paragraph that outlined its purpose. A memo should not start with a main point without a proper introduction. The use of language and choice of words is of critical importance in technical communication. The memo does not consider this. Many of the sentences use words that make it discourteous to the residents (Anderson 34). It is advisable to urge people to abide by certain rules instead of commanding them. Many residents may feel agitated by the threats in the memo and the improper use of language. As highlighted above, each paragraph deserves a proper heading so that communication may be more straight forward. The use of capital letters in an entire sentence is considered as yelling to the residents, and is improper to use in the memo. Although the building manager exercises a form of authority, the communication style used should reflect his respect for the residents. In any case, the residents are the customers and deserve the highest consideration. Therefore, it is unwise to address them in a manner that can be considered rude. It would have been more appropriate for the building manager to highlight the problems and make suggestions of potential solutions. This would have persuaded the residents to follow the rules of tenancy. Notably, the memo should use logos in an effort to convince the residents that they can do more in ensuring a high level of functionality in the plaza. However, the memo used pathos in creating fear in many of the residents, which is not an effectiv e strategy. The memo should leave a room for the tenants to give their suggestions on the new terms of tenancy. It is critical to bear in mind that there are terms and conditions that define the tenancy agreement (49). Therefore, introducing new rules should not be a form of compulsion to the tenants. In addition, it is improper to

Pros and Cons of US Capitalism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Pros and Cons of US Capitalism - Essay Example A capitalist economy or society with some degree of regulation of inequality, environment and the monopoly of power creates different outcomes as opposed to a purely capitalist one. The American capitalist system has significant government intervention in various fields such as healthcare, education and transport.1 There are various pros to the American type of capitalism. They include the following: The U.S capitalism system stimulates and encourages economic development. In a capitalist based system, the firms and individuals have incentives to be innovative and work hard in creating a climate promoting innovation and economic expansion.2 Thus, this is helpful in increasing the real gross domestic product (GDP) growth. It also leads to improvement in the living standards because there is a creation of wealth. Thus, enabling higher living standards. In theory, everyone is a beneficiary of the increasing wealth. It creates a trickle-down outcome from the rich to the poor. The American capitalism market has created increased competition. Competition is a natural outcome of capitalism. It is advantageous and beneficial because increased competition produces high quality products and a decreasing price of the product. Capitalism rewards firms and organizations that produce high quality products at the lowest market prices. It results in an increasing market share for the product producer. It forces firms to be more efficient in their means of product production. The efficiency pressurizes the firms to reduce product costs and avoid wastages. State-owned firms often tend to be wasteful and inefficient. For example, they are unwilling to get rid of surplus workers or methods of production that are wasteful. Furthermore, the state-owned corporations have fewer incentives to initiate innovative working practices. Another advantage of the American capitalist society is that the private sector has the means to ownership of

Development of Patient survey to Identify reasons associated with Essay

Development of Patient survey to Identify reasons associated with attrition from diabetes selfmanagement education (DSME) - Essay Example In US alone the figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2008 indicate that nearly 24 million people are affected by diabetes in the country, which indicates an increase of over 3 million in the last two years (Daly et al, 2009). Such alarming projections underline the importance of self help groups and self management education of the disease. Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) is considered an important tool for controlling to some extent the epidemic proportions acquired by the disease in recent times. Such measures are known to improve preventive care practices as it helps the patients to lead a disciplined life, thus controlling the extent of damage. During such education the patient gets to know the necessary knowledge, skills and self care methods. In addition the patients also share their experiences, which in turn others in learning from the shortcomings and mistakes. But the DSMEs have been found to suffer from some limitations in that they are not able to maintain the numbers and enthusiasm of the patients, which leads to some amount of attrition from DSME centers. An effort is being made through this study to find out some such cases and correlate the findings to come out with factors cont ributing to the attrition rate. During their research on the subject Peyrot et al (2009) ... Expansion of innovative DSME delivery mechanism plays a key role in influencing the access and delivery of DSME, particularly in community based settings (Peyrot et al, 2009). The ICT era presents a number of opportunities to the educators to be innovative in their approach while reaching out to the patients. Such an approach not only helps in easy reaching out to the patient, but it also helps in saving on the costs. The results based on internet surveys of more than a thousand adult diabetes patients indicted that, Diabetes self management education (DSME) can prove to be of significant help in contributing towards the health and well being of diabetic patients. It was also found out that those having not taken the services of DSMEs are not fully aware about the benefits of them, but those aware about their functioning highly regarded the benefits of such education centers. It might therefore appear quite intriguing that even after being fully aware about the benefits, the attritio n rate is on the higher side. Research by Peyrot et al (2009) also found out that patients having experienced the benefits of DSMEs also inform others as well about the positive side of undergoing a disciplined routine with DSME. The fact that physicians too want more support from self-management groups and educators, is an indication towards the impact such educations can have on the patients. But physicians also find that the educators often tell the patients to do things which quite often they don't agree with. That implies that the DSMEs need to be more user friendly, and they might need to assess the need even on an individual basis instead of categorizing them on the basis of a

History of Jerusalem Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

History of Jerusalem - Essay Example This hill was resettled in the early stages of the Bronze Age. In 70 AD, the Old Jerusalem was destroyed during the arduous Jewish Diaspora. It is rather believed that the event had been foreseen in the Bible (Gideons, 2005). The Herod’s temple was destroyed leaving know stone upon another stone. This information was documented in the book of Luke 21:24 of the Holy bible. The bible in the book of Jeremiah 25:30 states that the city of Jerusalem had been chosen by God and was to exist yet again. Prophets also foretold that Jerusalem was to rise yet again. For instance, prophet Isaiah says that the Lord is not going to forget the city he chose for his name. The New Jerusalem is made up of eleven gates with only seven of them open. It is said that the eastern gate is totally sealed to denote the denial of the Messiah’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. It is contrary to the biblical Jerusalem, which was to have all the twelve gates open (Ulijin, 1996). Jerusalem is an early city situated in ancient Judah the current capital of Israel. Its history dates back to fourth millennium BCE, hence the earliest and oldest city in the world. According to Judaism and Christianity, Jerusalem is the holiest City and it is the center of spirituality of the Jewish people in the period C. 1000 BCE, when King David first established it as the capital of the Nation of the Jewish. His son Solomon authorized the building of the City’s First Temple. According to the tradition of the Jewish, Shem and Eber, Abrahams ancestors, established the City. In the account of the biblical, when firstly revealed, Melchizedek, a friend of Abraham, heads Jerusalem, known as Salem during the ancient period. Thereafter, in Joshua’s period, Jerusalem was in a region allocated to the Benjamin’s tribe (Joshua 18: 28) but it remained to be controlled by Jebusites until when it was overtaken by David who made it to be the capital of Israel (C. 1000s BCE ) (Gideons, 2005). According to the scripture

Men and Women in Sports Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Men and Women in Sports - Essay Example Doping issues differ slightly in both genders. The trends in challenges and rewards faced by men and women throughout history in the past and what ought to be expected in the future shall be examined in full detail in the essay below. During the early 1960s, women were quite limited during access to sporting facilities. But in the late sixties, there was the introduction of the women's liberation movement. This served as a stage in which women realized that there was inequality in this area and it also acted as a platform where they could raise their concerns about the lack of opportunity. Therefore in the seventies, most colleges and high schools began opening up their fields to allow training and practice even for women. (Fasting and Knorre, 2005) At the same time, men had been the sole dominators in the 60s and 70s. This was mostly seen by the fact that there were sports like; football, baseball and basketball were played by men. The main challenge that they faced at this time was proving their worth in their sporting activity of choice. Facilities were not a hindrance to their progress Currently, things have improved for women in comparison to what happened three decades ago. Most high schools and colleges have formed women's teams in games like tennis, swimming, volleyball and basketball. Such institutions now recognize that female teams are almost if not as important as men's team. They have now designated time for women to access facilities like swimming pools, basketball fields and others. But this does not mean that women have full access to these facilities. There are some sporting facilities that are still considered predominantly male like rugby and baseball fields. Women engaging in such sports face a lot of difficulties when trying to practice or when training. It is even worse when trying to access facilities for the purpose of competition as precedence is given to males. Men in sports have to adjust to the fact that sporting facilities are not simply for them. They are now realizing that women's sports need to be accommodated; this means that they now have to get used to the idea of sharing. Things are not being handed down to them without any struggles. 2.3 Access to facilities in the future The future looks more promising to women because there are plenty of activities voicing the inequalities that women in sports have had to bear. This means that sports will now be less restricted and it is very likely that women will have fair practice and competing times in sporting facilities in high schools, colleges and even recreational facilities. (Fasting and Sundgot-Borgen, 2000) Men will continue facing more need to adjust to the fact the facilities are not simply meant for them. It is very likely that their domination of sporting facilities will come to a slow end. 3.0 Sportsmanship 3.1 Sportsmanship in the past During the 1960s and 1970s, there was blatant discrimination of women in sports. This was the reason why there was the women's movement in 1968. Women had to deal with the fact that they were denied representation in most games and most men simply thought that their form of sport was an intriguing issue to be seen but not to betaken seriously.(Leah et al 2002) At the same

Human Resource Development studies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Human Resource Development studies - Essay Example Hard skills are also known as technical/administrative skills that are necessary for an organizations success and overall operations. Hard skills are required for machine operators, computer administrators, safety officers and even financial procedures. Hard skills are easy to quantify, observe and even measure in an individual; moreover, they are attained through training and apprenticeship as opposed to soft skills which are acquired through life exposures and experiences (Wellington, 2005). Hard skills are easy to learn and acquire as they are physical skills that has no elementary background at the brains cell level. Soft skills are learnt as we grow, interact, do mistakes and get exposed to different life and work situations. Once incorporated and integrated into ourselves, soft skills cannot be replaced. This is because the brain cannot simply delete the behaviours and skills that we may feel are unnecessary. Acquiring these skills can also present a challenge once an individua l has grown and become so adept to his old practices. Human resource experts and managers have shifted their focus to soft skills as opposed to hard skills. This has resulted into a wide array of situations for the society, the employees and the employers. In this paper, the analysis of the impacts that this focus has created will be evaluated and critically discussed. Prominence will be given to the advantage of this new approach especially to the domestic and international human resource management and labour issues (Schulz, 2008). Impacts of emphasis on soft skills The increased demand for more employees with both the technical and hard skills has been attributed to the recent happenings in the business world. Competition has reached the highest level and organisations are striving to outdo each other in their innovativeness and good public relations. The growth in multinational companies and globalisation has also created another frontier for competition. The international marke t is more averse with technology and seeks quality and value in the services and products they seek to buy. All these have prompted human resource managers to develop new ways of promoting, recruiting and assigning responsibilities to their employees (Wellington, 2005). Technology intense projects have proved to have high failure rate when compared to projects that integrate the soft skills of the employees. Failure in any project that the organisation has invested a lot of resources, time and staff reduces the company’s competitive advantage and position in the market. This calls for individuals who can fuse both the hard skills that they posses to their soft skills to make them more viable and productive. The increasing competition in the job market and the increase in the number of fresh graduates and technical expertise have made it quite difficult to choose the best individual to engage (Riley, 2006). In an economy where the applicants have the same training, university academic staff and same graduate degrees, a new approach on how to choose new employees should be adopted. Human resource managers have in the recent past, resorted to sorting out the best employees based on soft skills as opposed to the hard skills. As all graduates will have the same technical skills,

Surviving influences with sense of self Essay Example for Free

Surviving influences with sense of self Essay Although many people tend to think that media and advertising are two of the worst culprits that are destroying good moral values, what is right and wrong has always been a subject of debate in history depending on who perceives it. The cowboys and the Indians both had reasons to live in the same territory but had to fight for their rights. Western conventional medicine dominated the east but Westerners use Chinese Traditional Medicine. It is not very easy to see what is right or wrong and even if one does perceive what is correct, there is no guarantee that he or she will do the proper thing. One’s strength of character and moral values are needed to establish a sense of self that will fight the bad influence that society usually promotes. It is very easy to influence someone with poor a poor sense of self. Convincing words and vivid pictures leading to a certain desirable outcome can easily sway someone who lacks backbone to do what is being asked. The mind can easily form pictures of what could be desirable and easily sway one to making decisions – whether good or bad. Poor self-esteem can assist advertising in making false promises. In the article entitled, â€Å"In the Shadow of the Image,† written by Stuart and Elizabeth Ewen (2006 p. 207), the authors mentioned the disillusionment of Frank Miller who watched John Wayne movies and got influenced into taking up his own cause against Southeast Asians who simply triggered a bullet on his chest to his dismay. The movies he had watched were meant to boost its audience’s self-esteem but it went further to influence Miller’s way of thinking and perception of other cultural minorities. Due to his poor knowledge of who he really is, he has failed to show respect for others and ultimately based his ego on the outcome of his own cause. According to the Ewens, he felt betrayed by the images he had seen. Miller failed to identify himself properly and now feels depressed that he let himself be influenced by Hollywood. He does not realize that it was his own choices that led him to act on film influences. Low self-esteem can be infectious. A person with poor sense of self will rely on a group of people with the same problem to acknowledge a false common factor. Being part of a group can be advantageous to boost self-esteem but it can go toward the wrong direction if the group exercises its strength by being prejudiced. Biases can take the form of skin color, the way people talk, or even how people move. Vertamae Smart-Grasvenor’s essay entitled, â€Å"When You Meet Estella Smart, You Been Met! † shows how her grandmother actually overcame the problem of prejudice by relying on her sense of self to perceive what is right and wrong. Instead of giving up eating rice to avoid being the butt of many jokes, she decided to â€Å"get rid of nothing that was worth keeping† and continued to eat rice and talk like a Southerner in a northern community. (232) People with poor self-image tend to cover this flaw by making it look like they are superior compared to others simply because they are â€Å"in† or part of a larger group. These people tend to look down on others who do not think the same way that they do. Estella Smart had been the object of many condescending comments because she refused to embrace the impractical way of life that her northern community encouraged. Comments such as, â€Å"Think she is something! She ain’t no better than nobody else! † (232) are obvious signs of jealousy that could have hurt a person who did not find strength in his own identity. However, for people like Estella Smart who know themselves better, gossiping people can say whatever they want for all they care. Another effect of advertising that is truly pushed by poor self-esteem is the fact that people tend to cover up their feelings of insecurity by buying products to make them feel better. Advertisements prey on people’s insecurities and poor self-image to entice its audiences to use their products to boost their self-worth. The Ewens mention a student, Gina Concepcion, who works so hard in their local supermarket just so she can be fashionable and wear Jordache clothing. She thinks that the pants may be very expensive but they â€Å"fit better and she fits better. † (207). Gina obviously bases her self-esteem on how people think about her and her pants. She has become enslaved by her insecurity to belong and had fallen prey to Jordache’s advertising scheme. Advertising and media can be very powerful influences in everyday decision-making but the real root of the problem lies on one’s sense of self. Most people easily fall into the trap of commercials because these ads know how to use their products to cover up for whatever insecurities a person has. If a child had grown up knowing that he has the power to choose what is good and bad for him (instead of grown ups simply telling him to follow instructions), then more people would probably be more resistant to promotional schemes. Knowing that one has the power to direct one’s life is essential to help people fight for what they believe in. Without the realization that destiny is simply in one’s hands, it becomes easy for humans to get depressed and be suffocated by the many crimes that can often be read on newspapers or seen or heard on the news. Not knowing that one has the power to change things or fight against what is wrong can ultimately develop fear in one’s psyche which has led to numerous suicide attempts and successes. Beverly Jackson’s suicide incident that the Ewens mentioned, happened only because the woman felt helpless and hopeless. If she had enough sense of self to know that there are many ways to protect and empower one’s self against crime, then she could be still alive by now. Advertising and pop culture can only devour people who have poor self-image. More often than not, commercialism’s effects on its victims may not be detected because the brain has been deceived to see great solutions to the insecurities that people have. Only people who have been raised to know that they have the distinct power to put direction in their lives by using their choices can inevitably resist the temptations that pop culture has in store for every one. Estella Smart knew this and overcame being a domestic helper (which she despised terribly) by learning how to sew during the evenings after her work. (Smart-Grasvenor 232) It all boils down to how people have been raised. Advertising and media have been goons that continue to affect man’s choices and ways of life. However, the reason behind this success rests on poor self-image. If people learn to develop the power that is within them and use them to do what is good, then pop culture would diminish. It is one’s sense of self that can triumph against the negative influence of any culture. Works Cited Ewen, Stuart and Elizabeth Stuart. â€Å"In the Shadow of the Image. † Reading Culture. Ed. E-commerce website

E-commerce website Introduction This document consists of a project designed to construct an E-Commerce website for a mobile phone store. Using different methodologies this report will explain in depth how the website was constructed and whether this project was a success. The website allows users shop online for mobile phones and mobile phone accessories. The website consists of many features, which aid the users in locating their desired item i.e. powerful search engine, language translator and easy to use guided navigation menu. These features facilitate users in pin pointing the exact product they are looking for. The website is based around a mobile phone store located in Victoria Greater London. The store is called E Cell Mobile and is a small PLC, which sells mobile phones and accessories. This website has been constructed for the sole purpose of helping the company expand their business to a vast range of customers and to increase company revenue. In order to achieve this goal there were a couple meetings that were held between the developer (me) and the storeowner. During these meetings it was decided that one of the most efficient ways to accomplish this goal, was to create a website to reach out to customers. This should help increase company revenue as well as, being cost efficient given that it is not very costly to run a website, if compared to opening another store. An administrator account has been created, which is to be used by the storeowner. This account was created to allow simple and efficient maintenance of the website. With the use of this account the administrator has access to the whole website and can easily edit data with use of a simple GUI, no PHP knowledge is needed. This would be a great benefit to the storeowner since he can very easily maintain the site. This account allows the admin to add more products using the CSV Import Function, add/edit/delete customers and/or product data and much more. The payment aspect of the website is dealt by PayPal. Once a user selects an item they wish to buy they are redirected to PayPals SSL page. It is made clear to the user that they do not need a PayPal account in order to purchase an item on the website. Once the user is redirected to PayPals secure payment page, they can select the option to pay by direct debit or credit card. If there are any discrepancies with payment then E Cell cannot be held responsible and the case shall go to PayPals accounts department. Analysis During the stage at which the PID was constructed there were a few aspects, which were overlooked. Throughout the analysis phase of this report there will be a few stages from the PID that will be extended, rearranged and added. This project is based around a mobile phone company that does not have an online system. All transactions, customer details and product information are stored on a database that is located on the shop floor. The system that is used to interact with day-to-day customers is pretty slow and lags most of the time. The system that is currently being used is called Metasys. This particular software is a database system, which stores customer and product information. When the store gets a new customer, a staff member inputs the customers details manually into the database. All products are added to the database through a Point of Sale System (POS). Now after doing a bit of research it was discovered that this company (Metasys) was no longer in business and as a result no upgrades are available for this software. To get an idea of how bad the current system was, a few surveys were designed and given out to staff members on the shop floor (these can be seen in Appendix B). Judging by the results received from this assessment it was clear to see that a new system needed to be put in place. Below is a list that has been devised to show the problems with the current system: System often freezes when taking down customer information The database can be very slow at times when accessing large amounts of data Does not have the latest security updates due to the company no longer being in business Opening and closing the database sometimes leads to corruption of data. The system can be slow to respond to common tasks such as View Customer Info A secondary issue that needs to be discussed is that this particular company (E Cell Mobile) would like to expand their business and reach out to a larger customer base and therefore increasing the businesses revenue. The company does not wish to open a new store since this would require a large sum of money, which the organization cannot afford. This project proposes to replace this old system with a new a modern way of doing business. The new system needs to be faster, easy to maintain and a lot more reliable. Although the current database running on the shop floor has a lot of disadvantages there is one positive aspect that allows new mobile phones that arrive for delivery to be added to the database quickly and easily. This is the POS (Point of Sale) system currently used by the employees at E Cell. When a bunch of mobile phones arrive for delivery, a staff member uses an electronic laser to scan the bar codes; these are displayed on the packaging of all the mobile phones. After a particular product has been scanned it will automatically be added to the companys database. E Cell also receives an electronic spreadsheet from their supplier, which consists of all the items that have been delivered to them on that specific date. The point of sale system is a great method for populating information into database. It is fast, simple and requires minimal effort. In order for this project to be a success it is important that this particular method for adding information to the companys database is either improved upon or kept the same. If for any reason the POS system is removed and another system is put into place, then this new system must be able to perform tasks, which are faster and much simpler then the point of sale system. Aims Objectives Every project consists of a number of goals, which need to be achieved. These goals decipher whether the project will be a success or a failure. A successful project would have met and accomplished each target. The main aim of this project is to create a product, which resolves the problems that are encountered by the current system. Below is a list of aims and objectives for this particular project. Some of these aims and objectives that were looked at during the project initiation stage have been changed and modified. There has been an addition of some new goals to the list. The list below has been based around, how appalling the current system is and if a new system was to be created what would it need in order to be successful. Aims: The system should be easy to navigate around Buying an item should be fast and efficient The system must be user friendly The system must be faster and more reliable than the old system The admin should be able to add/delete/edit customer and product information Objectives: To provide a mobile system that allows users to purchase mobile phones and accessories. Allow users to create their own customer account online. To provide an interface usable by less literate computer users. Allow users to save any transactions that have been made Provide users with tracking info so they can track their purchase As mentioned in the project initiation document this project will take the DSDM approach. DSDM states that in order to achieve maximum business benefit and a fully working system that is fit for purpose; one must outline the user/business requirements and aim to accomplish them all. DSDM uses an excellent prioritisation method called MoSCoW. This prioritisation method outlines the crucial requirements that need to be achieved in order to get a system fit for purpose. All requirements shown in the Must Have section below have to be completed in order for this project to be successful. MoSCoW Prioritization Must Have Users must be able to buy a mobile phone online (M1) System must contain search parameters to allow ease of use (M2) Site should be user friendly (M3) Admin should be able to add/delete/edit product and customer information (M4) POS system needs to be improved upon or left as it is (M5) Should Have The user is contacted via email once they have made a purchase (S1) The user can email a staff member if they have a question (S2) Could Have Google Maps to display location of shop (C1) An online chat client to answer user queries (C2) Wont Have Selling mobile tariffs (All mobile phones will be pay-as-you-go and not on contract) (W1) All of the requirements of the Moscow prioritization have been tagged e.g. M1, M2, S1, W1 etc. The reason they have been tagged is because they will be referred to as M1, M2, S1 etc during the implementation phase of this report. Requirements There are certain sets of requirements that need to be achieved when creating this new system. These requirements are split into two sections, Functional and Non-Functional. These are outlined below. Functional requirements Multiple transactions can be made at the same time Customers can add items to a shopping basket Customers can view, edit and remove items from shopping basket Customer is notified via email when purchase is complete Non-Functional Guided navigation menu makes browsing easy for the user Transactions can be completed using multiply currencies Availability System will be up 24/7 with minimum down time Accessibility The system can be viewed in other languages other than English Requirements Table A central list of requirements was constructed by the client, these have been listed below. Each of these requirements need to be met otherwise this project will be a failure since the final product will not be fit for purpose. The client gave a larger list of requirements (shown in Appendix D) however the requirements listed in table below is what the client has said to be mandatory prerequisites and thus need to be completed. Feasibility Study In the feasibility study the following areas will be looked at, project risk analysis, cost benefit analysis and stakeholder analysis. Project Risk Analysis Cost Benefit Analysis Since this is a student project there wont be a huge budget. The software that will be used to create this product will either be freeware or already available to the developer. As a result cost will be kept to a minimal. In terms of hardware, a pc/laptop is already available since the University provides this and electrical fees/bills will also be covered by the University. If the system is to be hosted online then these fees will be paid by E Cell Mobile although a free hosting provider will be the first priority. Stakeholder Analysis Managing stakeholders is an important factor in order for this project to be successful. Below is a list of all the stakeholders involved in this project i.e. people that are affected by the work that is done, who influence or have power over it or have an interest in its successful or unsuccessful conclusion. Vishal Verma (Project Manager/Developer) The developers role will be to manage the project, make sure all milestones are met and that the final product is produced within the set deadline. Jim Johnston (Client/General Manager) Jim will be the first point of contact. He manages most of the staff and deals with all sales related aspects. Dean Forster (Store Manager/Company Owner) Dean is the owner of the store and will be the second point of contact. Project Method Approach There is one main objective, which needs to be fulfilled in order for this project to be a success. The new E Cell Mobile system needs to be fit for purpose. A system that is fit for purpose will ideally meet all user/business requirements of this project. Below is a quote from Harvey and Green (1993) that explains what fit for purpose actually is. Quality is thus judged in terms of the extent to which the product or service fits its purpose. This notion is quite remote from the idea of quality as something special, distinctive, elitist, conferring status, or difficult to attain. It is a functional definition of quality rather than an exceptional one. If something does the job it is designed for then it is a quality product or service. (p.16) Every product and service has the potential to fit its purpose and thus be a quality product or service. Fitness for purpose has emerged as the fashionable way to harness the drive for perfection. The ultimate measure of perfection, zero defects, may be excellent as a definition of quality but runs the fatal risk of being perfectly useless. If the product does not fit its purpose then its perfection is irrelevant. (p.17) This specific project will be using the DSDM approach, this is because by using the DSDM approach the project itself will be carefully planned e.g. MoSCoW, timeboxing, facilitated workshops etc. At times it can be very easy for a project manager to become unorganized especially if the project has not been planned and as result, the final results may be below satisfactory. Due to this reason MoSCoW prioritisation has been discussed earlier on in this report so that the project manager/developer and the client know what exactly the final product will contain. In conjunction to the management of this project, DSDM Atern will be the main forefront. This technique mainly focuses on Time, Cost and Quality. Figure 1 below (Atern Approach) states that Time, Cost, Quality is fixed and will not be changed throughout the projects life cycle, whereas features can be manipulated since it is a variable. The traditional approach to this is the complete opposite and will be avoided since quality should never be compromised. Facilitated Workshops Facilitated workshops are part of the DSDM Atern development approach. Since this project uses the Atern management method it was vital to incorporate the facilitated workshop technique into this project. By using an interactive environment, effective group dynamics and visual aids, facilitated workshops are designed to extract high quality of information in a compressed time frame in order to meet the predetermined set of deliverables. By constructing these workshops it will make it easier to achieve the targets that have been set from the beginning. The project manager will act as the facilitator and arrange these meetings. Information that maybe be discussed in the workshops is as follows: Who is the target audience? How can the business reach out to customers? Advertising Sponsorship The list is just a small number of topics that maybe be discussed during the workshops. It is vital that all the project stakeholders attend these meetings. Facilitated workshops will give the project manager an overview of what needs to be done and the time everything needs to be completed in. Design During the design phase of this project there were a number of solutions that came to mind. The new system that is to be created must overcome the problems faced by the old outdated/system. Below is a list of solutions that could be implemented to solve the problems discussed during the analysis phase. Rebuild the system on the shop floor. Install new database software and get faster and more reliable hardware to cater for the new database. Build a website to cater for customers, this will also have an online database Open a new branch in order expand the business Two of the solutions shown above (Rebuilding the system and opening a new branch) just do not seem feasibly. Opening a new branch would just to be too costly and would require a lot more man power, effort and time which the company does not have. In terms of rebuilding the new system, the cost of installing a new database and installing new hardware was just too high and above the companys budget. The only measurable idea was to create a website; this would be cost efficient and require minimal effort. The final solution was to create an E-Commerce website. This website will be online 24/7, and as a result can be accessed by staff members anytime of the day/night. Employees will no longer need to go to the shop floor to access the database. The website will contain an administrator account that will only be able to be accessed by staff members. This account will give access to the companys database, which will include access to product details, customer information and any transactions that have taken place. Users will be able to go onto this website buy a mobile phone (or any mobile accessories), add the item to a basket and then pay for it. PayPal will handle the payment system so the business will have the peace of mind that their money is safe and secure and so will the customers. The way the payment system will work is once the user has added an item to their shopping basket they will have the option to checkout. The checkout page will give the user a brief description (preliminary invoice) of the transaction, this will include; item description and total price. On this page it will be made clear to the user that they will be paying via PayPal and that a PayPal account is not necessary need in order to make a payment. Once the user accepts these conditions they will be redirected to PayPals payment page, this is where account details such as bank account number, sort code are entered. PayPal will verify this information and send out two emails. The first email will be sent to the customer verifying payment and the second email will be sent to the administrator of the site which will contain an invoice of that particular transaction. Once payment has been confirmed by PayPal the administrator can deliver the item to the customers address. Tracking of all delivered items will be provided to all customers. There will be a Tracking section on the website which will give a detailed explanation on how customers can track their purchased products. The way the tracking system will work is once the payment has been confirmed by PayPal the administrator will post the item via Royal Mail/DHL to the customers address. Royal Mail/DHL will then provide the administrator with a tracking number. This particular number will be posted to the customer via email. The customer can then visit Royal Mails/DHLs website (the link for this is provided in the email) and enter the transaction number to get a rough idea of when their purchased item will be arriving. Organisational Benefits By creating an E-Commerce website it will tackle all the problems the company is currently facing and also, it will be very cheap to run and maintain. Below is a list outlining the benefits of opening an E-Commerce store for E Cell Mobile. Expand business Interact with a larger customer base Increase company revenue Faster and more reliable system Easy to maintain Secure Software Tools To develop the website the following languages/tools/software will be used: PHP/PHP Editor This will be used as the server side code. PHP will be used to communicate with the MySQL database. AJAX AJAX will be helpful since you can update part of a webpage without refreshing the whole content. So in this case the user can enter a search query and instead of refreshing the whole page the results for the search are shown instantly Jscript/jQuery Guided navigation menu MySQL All customer/product data will be stored on a MySQL database. Adobe Flash Flash player will be used on the home page in order attract the audience to the website. Swish This program will be used to create a flash video. Although this program is not freeware it is still possible to use the 30 day trial period. phpMyAdmin By using the easy to use GUI provided by phpMyAdmin it will make it a lot easier to manage the MySQL database. CSS/HTML/XML Designing the website (Aesthetics) Adobe Photoshop Constructing the company logo Quick n Easy FTP Uploading files to the server Apache v2.5 To enable local host a web server needs to be initialised ergo Apache will be utilised. Prototyping Since this project will use an agile approach it was important to build a horizontal prototype. This allows the developer to construct the product in an iterative cycle and therefore achieving better functionality. The horizontal prototype is the man-machine interface (MMI). At first a quick sketch is drawn on a piece of paper in order to get an idea of what is to be done. To make a prototype for the E Cell Mobile system, the website www.gomockingbird.com was utilised. These prototype models can be seen on page 15 (Figure 4, 4.1, 4.2 etc) During the horizontal prototyping surface interface software functionalities were not working but by creating a sketch (using the go mockingbird website) it allowed the developer to achieve a perception test. This helped to evaluate how easily other users could understand the interface. During the perception test users were just shown a bunch of windows and buttons, on a piece of paper. The users were then asked to explain what they understand from the information displayed before them. The results for the perceptions test can be seen in Appendix C Horizontal prototyping allows the developer to check the behavior of the interface and decipher the vital points, where usability inconsistencies are likely to appear. After completing the horizontal prototype, and in order to get a full analysis of the user interface, another set of tests was done. These tests are known as Vertical Prototyping. This helped to implement a consistent set of functionalities in order to allow the user to achieve a typical scenario of usability. These tests were only done after the GUI was 90% complete. At this stage the prototyping consisted of a series of user tests during, which the vital points raised throughout the horizontal prototyping phase are evaluated. Usability Test This specific test allows identifying of usability problems and analysing their cause with the users. The user is given the system and allowed to beta test it in any way they like. Solutions are elaborated and implemented during this stage of the prototype and as a result may change the final look and feel of the system. The results for this particular test can be seen in Appendix E. This test was constructed after the website was completed. If any discrepancies were found during these tests then website was modified accordingly. GUI Design Before the implementation phase a few screen designs were constructed. This gave a rough idea of how the website should be built. These screen designs were shown to a random bunch of users in order to assess the usability of the interface (Perception testing Appendix C) The customer must enter their user name password into these fields in order to login. By using the Forgot Password? link the user can input their email address which they used to register with the website, and a new password will be sent to this email address. By checking the Remember Me? check box a cookie will be added to the users internet explorer folder. This means the user will no longer need to type in their user name and password every time they visit this page. Product Details These are images of the product Breadcrumb trail; the user can use these links to go back and forth. This section of the page displays information regarding the product. The user can use this link to tell a friend about a product listed on this page. Necessary information such as friends name, email etc must be filled out The information in the Captcha must be entered to verify that you are human and not a bot. A message can be written regarding the contents of this email. A short description of the company such as when it started and who is involved in the organisation. Contact information will also be shown in this section e.g. address, email telephone etc. Using the Google Maps API, E Cell Mobiles location will be shown on this interactive map. UML Case Diagram Below is a case diagram for the system that is to be built. It displays two Actors, the User and the Administrator. In the middle is the system where all calculations and processes are made. The user (customer) is able to perform a number of functions, such as searching for an item they wish to buy, adding that specific item to a basket, emailing the site owner etc. The Administrator is able to perform high priority decisions such as viewing all customer transactions, removing or adding customer and product information etc. The ERM diagram shown in figure 6 displays the different types of tables that will be used in order to create the database. Each table has a different number of attributes and each attribute has its own data type. Each table has its own primary key; this is a unique identifier for every table and is not repeated. Some tables include foreign keys; this is a referential constraint between two tables. The entity relationships between each table can clearly be seen by the bold and dotted lines. Certain tables have a one to one relationship whereas some may have a one to zero relationship. This ERM model was constructed using MySQL Workbench. This is a freeware program provided by MySQL. Information is taken from a phpMyAdmin database and then converted into an ERM model automatically. Below is a brief description of each table in the database. Admin Users: This table holds details for all the administrators. Administrators are split into two categories; Super User and User. An administrator classed as a super user will have full control over the website and an administrator classed as user will be able to control certain aspects of the website. Search: This table holds details for all search related queries posed by the user. If a user searches for Apple iPhone then this particular search request will be recorded in to this table. This is mainly for the administrator to view and analyse what the most popular search requests are. As a result the admin can cater for the users needs. For example, a large number of users search for the same mobile phone however, there is no such phone is listed in the database. The administrator can view this particular search query and cater for the users needs by adding that specific handset model to the database and thus increasing sales. Brands: This table will hold details for all the different types of brands of mobile phones and their related images. Order Summary: Once the user has bought a product, the details of that particular transaction will accumulate in this table. This table will hold information such as customer details, product details and the total price of that particular sale. Towards the finalization of a transaction the customer is shown a summary page, this consists of details regarding their purchase. This information is taken from the Oder Summary table. Inventory: This table holds details of all the products in the database; this will include attributes such as price, description, name etc. Order Inventory: All transactions that are made will be stored in this table. Customer: This table holds customer details such address, phone number, postcode etc. Activity Diagram The Activity diagram (Figure 7), displays how the new system will work. The current system works in a similar way however orders are not shipped to the customer, since the customer is already in store when making the purchase. The new system will be online and therefore when a customer makes a purchase their item will be delivered to their specified destination. An invoice will also be sent to the customer via email. The invoice will be sent to the users registered email address. Once payment has been made through PayPal, they administrator will be notified by PayPal, via an email outlining the transaction details and confirmation of payment. Dataflow Diagram (New/Improved User Interface) The dataflow diagram below shows a brief outline of how the user interface will look like for the new E Cell Mobile system. The diagram explains some user interactions such as, the user can search or browse for a product, items can be added to a shopping basket etc. From the flowchart we can clearly see that it is not obligatory for the user to login in order to search or browse the site however, in order to purchase an item it is mandatory that all users register and login. Hosting When building a website it is crucial to setup a web server. This can either be hosted on your own personal computer or hosting can be bought. There are a number of advantages/disadvantages for hosting online and from your pc. As the developer of this project it is important to choose the correct hosting method so that it does not affect the development of the system. Below is a list of two hosting methods that can be used, each method has its pros and cons. Localhost Localhost means this computer and is donated by an IP address of 127.0.0.1. It can be used to host content to the World Wide Web. There is no charge for this since content is hosted from you own computer. In order for localhost to wor,k a web server needs to be installed. Since this website will be using a large database, MySQL and PHP also need to be installed. The two main web servers out there today are Apache and IIS. As the developer of this project it is important to decipher which one of these is the best web server to use for this project. After doing a bit of research the following results were obtained. IIS and Apache operate very differently and thus have a variety of advantages of disadvantages. IIS is designed and available to work only within the Windows environment. With IIS 6.0, the only platform currently supported is Windows Server 2003. Although this limits the deployment platf

Totalitarianism In Orwells 1984 Politics Essay

Totalitarianism In Orwells 1984 Politics Essay George Orwells 1984 is about a man Winston Smith in a country called Oceania with a government called IngSoc. Winston lives in constant fear as he is arrested and tortured by members of the Party, people participating in IngSoc. Orwell shows how IngSoc is a controlling government. Also, he discusses the dangers of a government like IngSoc. IngSoc is a totalitarian government. Orwell denounces totalitarianism by creating a dystopia that has a totalitarian government. Totalitarianism is the form of government that theoretically permits no individual freedom and that seeks to subordinate all aspects of the individuals life to the authority of the government. When Orwell published 1984, totalitarianism denoted a society in which political power was in the hands of a dictator or leader and a nontraditional ruling elite; the mass of the population was not only politically powerless but deprived of all intellectual and cultural resources (Gleason, 148). Totalitarianism is a tempting option for countries whose citizens are suffering. The totalitarian states of Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler (1933-45) and the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin (1924-53) were the first examples of decentralized or popular totalitarianism, in which the state achieved overwhelming popular support for its leadership (totalitarianism n.p.). In Nazi Germany, the citizens were overcoming a huge depression resulting from the loss in World War I. In the Soviet Union, the people ov erthrew an unproductive, uncaring Tsarist government. George Orwell had many bad experiences with totalitarianism, and recounts these events in 1984. He experienced firsthand the effects of a fascist government in World War II. In 1948, when Orwells 1984 was first published, World War II had just ended. During World War II, mass murders were ordered by totalitarian leaders like Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin. Adolf Hitler, in Germany, had slaughtered his enemiesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ killing six million Jews plus nine million Slavs, gypsies, political dissidents, homosexuals, and mentally challenged people (1984 242). Orwell, influenced by genocide caused by a single powerful man, prompted him to reflect upon the cause of so many deaths. He powerfully expresses his worries about the dangers of a totalitarian government by creating his own dystopia in 1984. A totalitarian government works to control the mind of the people. One way to induce subservience is to control pleasure. The Party controls people by limiting and suppressing pleasure. To remove the pleasure from society diminishes the morale of the people, allowing the government to enforce its will. Sex is a social activity looked down upon by the Party through organizations like the Junior Anti-Sex League. Laurence Lerner suggests, [Orwell] considers [sex] extremely important because of its concentration on pure pleasure and IngSoc is a society dedicated to the abolition of pleasure (Bloom 73). Julia uses sex as a medium to rebel against the Party. Seeing Julias rebellious act, Winston joins her and expresses his desire for rebellion as well. Scores of time she had done ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Anything that hinted at corruption always filled him with a wild hope (Orwell 125). Winstons hope is exactly what a totalitarian government desires to destroy. Also, when OBrien tortures Winston in Room 101, he reveals the motives of the Party: The sex instinct will be eradicated. Procreation will be an annual formality like the renewal of a ration card. We shall abolish orgasm (Orwell, 267). By removing the pleasures of sex and all pleasures of society, the Inner Party is free to exert its will upon the citizens of Oceania. Under totalitarian rule, traditional social institutions and organizations are discouraged and suppressed (totalitarianism n.p.). Totalitarianism takes away freedom by installing surveillance and limiting activity. The Party uses the Thought Police, Spies, and telescreens to monitor the citizens of Oceania at all times. Winston buys a blank diary and writes in it while he is in his flat. However, Winston fears the Thought Police will catch him for Thoughtcrime. Winston had committedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ the essential crime that contained others in itself. Thoughtcrime they called it (Orwell 19). The Party can accuse anyone of committing Thoughtcrime, even without any evidence. Parsons was taken away by his own children for committing Thoughtcrime. Thoughtcrime also has the ultimate penalty: Thoughtcrime does not entail death: Thoughtcrime IS death (Orwell 28). When free thought is a crime, the government can destroy any mode of thinking which is not its own. When Winston first sees Julia, he is worried that she is a spy. Whether she was really an agent of the Thought Police, or simply an amateur spy actuated by officiousness, hardly mattered (Orwell 101). Winston lives in constant fear of being caught and tortured by the Party. The Spies are a group of children who are taught how to catch adults of committing Thoughtcrime. Parsons children, members of the Spies, turn in their own father to the Party through dedication to the Party. Julia and Winston are in what they think is the last safe place, a room without a telescreen. However, the room hides a telescreens behind a picture, allowing the Party to spy on them while engaged in private activity. A government that can fully monitor its citizens instills fear and maintains full control. The Party uses the media to confuse its citizens. On the telescreens pictures of the enemy, Emanuel Goldstein, appear with other subliminal messages. A depiction of Goldstein shows a lean Jewish face, with a great fuzzy aureole of white hair and a small goatee beard- a clever face, and yet somehow inherently despicable (Orwell 12). His despicable face incites anger in the population, even if directed at an imaginary figure. The anger is then redirected toward the true enemy, as the telescreens then show pictures of Eurasian soldiers, the country Oceania is at war against. Manipulating the media manipulates the attitudes citizens have. The Party uses Newspeak and doublethink to confuse the citizens of Oceania. NEWSPEAK is calculated to get rid of individuality by limiting the range of though through cutting the choice of words to a minimum (1984, 249). The Party restricts the words used to be only positive, preventing any negative comments towards the government. The purpose of Newspe ak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-vie and mental habits proper to the devotees of IngSoc, but to make all other modes of thought impossible (Orwell, 299). To eliminate other modes of thought is to eliminate the inherent freedom of thought. Totalitarianism leaders sole concern is gaining power. The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or a long life or happiness; only power, pure power (Orwell, 263). Orwell intends to manifest the intentions of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, but to a more extreme level. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it (Orwell, 263). Orwell parallels the motives of the Party with the motives of the Nazis and Communists to a greater extent. The Nazis and Communists had original intentions of freedom and prosperity for their people, but were deluded by a thirst for power. In Oceania, the g overnment has willingly accepted full power and a truly totalitarian government where Big Brother does indeed control all. In Nazi Germany and Stalins Soviet Union, whole classes of people, such as the Jews and the kulaks (wealthy peasant farmers) respectively, were singled out for persecution and extinction. (totalitarianism, n.p.). Totalitarianism blinds the citizens of Oceania. The proles, carrying a different view than the Party members, are branded as evil. The Party taught that the proles were natural inferiors who must be kept in subjection, like animals, by the application of a few simple rules (Orwell, 71). The inferiority of the proles is compared to animals, which lack intelligence to humans. Although the proles have the power to rebel, the Party forces them to believe they are inferior to humans, causing them to live separate from the population. Totalitarianism is a tempting option for countries overcome with poverty. Orwell advises to the citizens of those countries to not select that path. Countries like Germany, Italy, and Russia have instilled totalitarian government into their countries, causing many deaths, and many to lose freedoms. Totalitarian leaders are only concerned with genuine power no matter how many people are harmed.

Hardware and Software Required for a System :: Papers

Hardware and Software Required for a System There are two main types of components required for a system to work. These are: v Hardware – The parts of a computer that you can see and you can handle; the exterior components of the computer. v Software – The actual programs that allow the hardware to do a useful job. Hardware The main components of an ICT system include the following: v Input devices – these enable the data to enter the system. This could be through keyboard, scanner, digital camera, etc. v Central Processing Unit (CPU) – the brain of the computer. This part of the hardware stores and processes data. It has three parts: ALU (arithmetic and logic unit; it performs all the arithmetic and logic operations), the control unit, and the memory. v Backing storage – consists of the disk drives, tape drives, RW-CD (read/write compact disk), RW-DVD (read/write digital versatile disk), etc. used to store data when the power is switched off. [IMAGE] Software Software is the general name for programs that can be run on computer hardware. There are two main categories of software: operating system software and applications software. Operating systems are programs that control the computer hardware directly. The operating system I am going to choose for the new system will be Windows XP. Applications software is used to perform a specific task. Applications software varies from word-processing packages used to write letter, prepare reports, etc. to specialist applications packages used only within one industry. The applications I will be choosing for the new system will be: v MS word – A word processing application. This will be used for word processing letters of confirmation, letters of payment, and mail merging letters. v MS access – A database application. This will be used for taking details such as personal information, booking details, and payment details. v MS excel – A spreadsheet application, this application can make

Long Days Journey into Night Eugene by ONeill Essay -- Long Days Jo

In the play Long Day’s Journey Into Night by Eugene O’Neill, the Tyrone family is haunted not by what is present in flesh facing them, but by memories and constant reminders of what has been the downfall of the family for years. " No it can never be now. But it was once, before you-" (72) [James Tyrone referring to the Morphine addiction of his wife, Mary, which attributed to the undoing of the family]. Their trials and tribulations are well documented by O’Neill through the proficient utilization of theme, characterization, plot, setting, and style. Throughout the play, O’Neill’s theme is one of a disclosure into the life of a seemingly normal family on the outside yet convoluted with bitterness on the inside. It portrays the actions of a dysfunctional family and brings us on a reflective journey from when the fledgling family had started, devoted to one another with high hopes for the future, to what it is today, a family engulfed in turmoil. Healing in Judith Guests Ordinary People :: Judith Guest Ordinary People Essays

The Question of Healing in Ordinary People How do you define healing? In the dictionary it says that to be healed you are cured, resolved, free from worry. But is that what everyone else thinks of healed as. In the novel Ordinary People, written by Judith Guest, Conrad Jarret goes from being a young boy to an adult within a year. He did not know what he was like himself, in the beginning of the story, then there were things that made him grow, and lastly did he heal? At first Conrad did not know who he was or what his purpose was, when he came home form the hospital. Con had no sense of direction because at the hospital there was an everyday routine that he got used to. When he came home he made up his own routine in the beginning. He tried to go back to what every thing was like before his decsion. But he was unable to. He was trying to take one day at time. One thing was true though "Things were so different at the hospital. People were, you know, turned on all the time. And u just cannot live like that. You cannot live with all that emotion floating around, looking for a place to land. It is do exhausting (55, Guest)." This quote is trying to say that at the hospital people were like machines. The staff told them what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Outside the hospital you get to make your own choices. The things that made him change would be the relationships he had with his elders, Mom, Dad, and Berger his therapist. Con could always talk to him and also looked to him for good advice. Another person would be his girlfriend Jen. She made him open his eyes to see the world and opened his heart to feel. One more thing would be his music. Music made him feel accepted; he didn't have to care about any thing else when he was singing or playing his guitar. Berger even told con that, "People don not change on command for other people (121, Guest). Meaning that Con cannot change instantly when someone tells him to.

Health and Social Care Unit 1 P2,

Argyles theory Michael argyle was a psychologist born on august 11th 1925. He was one of the best known social psychologist who spent most of his career in the University of Oxford. Later on he gained a first experimental degree in psychology from Cambridge University in 1950 and later became the first lecturer in social psychology at the University of Oxford, also with London school of economics. The communication cycle. The communication cycle is when we understand what is being said, reflect and check out what the person you are communicating with is saying. When communicating to people we have to make sure they understand what we are saying and respond to it accordingly. The communication cycle has 6 steps. Step one- an idea occurs Have you idea of what you are going to communicate -Who you are going to communicate with, for example if they are older or younger than you and if so how much are they, or a work colleague -What the person on the recovering end should do with the info rmation for example if a parent asks the chid a question they are expecting an answer -What is the best way to communicate the certain information, for example if a doctor is telling a patient they are terminally ill they should say it in a gentle, caring tone and show that they care -Should I have used diagrams, charts, pictures or any other sign language for example if you are communicating with someone who has a speech, visual and hearing disability Step two-message coded The second step is that you need to code the message. You should think about what language you are going to talk to the person in and if they’re going to understand it, you also need to think about what barriers may affect the way you are going to put across this message. When you’re talking to a child you have to change the way you talk and use simple English and basic words so the child understands you properly. You may also need to think about using signs and symbols for those who have difficul ty communicating. Linked to the above example I would hoose my words carefully to be supportive but also give them the opportunity to express their feelings Step 3- send the message When sending a message communicate clearly and making sure that you’re saying the right things at the right time. Some things that you have to consider is that maybe the receiver of the message is having a hard time so you may have to think of sensitive things to say. You also have to make sure that you are communicating this information in a clear and understandable environment so you will have to make sure that the lighting is good and also that there’s no distractions wherever you are going to hold this conversation. Related article: Unit 4: Health and Social Care Level 3Step 4-message received The fourth step of the communication cycle is that the message should be received but this depends on whether the message is either spoken or written because there are different ways of storing the information and also converting the information. If you find something hard to understand you should always ask the speaker and they should be able to explain it again but you should always wait for the speaker to finish talking and not interrupt. If the message received is being read you should always find somewhere to read it quietly, not be distracted and if you don’t seem to understand it you should try and reply to the person sending you the message.Step 5-message code If the message has been sent effectively, you should be able to understand what is being said or written. For example if a carer asks their patient how they feel, they will respond by saying if they are feeling good or bad. Does your b ody language back up what you are saying? For example if a member of staff at a primary school is talking to a toddler their body language should be calm and inviting and their voice should be calm and gentle rather than tense Step 6-message understood The last step is of the communication cycle is to make sure that the message has been understood even though sometimes you may not understand the first time but you may understand if its explained more than once. It’s like if you were explaining something to someone who didn’t understand what you were saying you would have to explain it more than once for the information to be understood. Tuckman Tuckman looks at the way groups work together. The first part of Tuckmans theory is forming which is when someone meets someone new or more than one person/ people meet and start to share knowledge and information this might even be information about yourself and the other person The second part of Tuckmans theory is storming whi ch is when the task is given to the group members. Storming is when say a team or group of people put ideas across to each other and discuss these ideas.During storming although the group members don’t know each other that well they start to work together more and do less independent work. The storming part is hard because the fact that the group members don’t know each other properly will make it hard because different people might have different ways of communicating and this may be a barrier to communication. The third part of Tuckmans theory is norming so when the group have finished storming they start to move onto norming which is when everything becomes normal and the group gets used to each other and decide to start communicating without difficulties and without any kinds of problems.Stage four of Tuckmans theory is called performing, when the team starts to work together properly and get everything done. Everyone in the group knows what they’re doing an d are assigned tasks together or even separately and the leader of the group won’t have to even interfere only when there are some disagreements. An example of this is a new nursery starting up to start with a group of new people would come together under the leadership of the manager. Together they would start forming relationships and lead by the manager would start to develop the aims of the nursery. As they would come from various backgrounds they may all have different ideas to contribute and ways of oing things during the forming stage the group would identify ways to work together with the leader still making sure that all ideas are listened to, there would possibly be some disagreements at this stage and the manager would still need to do some leading of the group. Once the group have identified the way that they want the nursery to run and everyone in the group knows what they’re doing they move on to the norming stage where people begin to work with each othe r knowing what they should be doing and communicating effectively Finally after a while if there are no changes to staffing the group will work independently knowing what they are doing and will need little assistance from the manager most of the time.

Macbeth’s diary Essay

I am fighting for my king, Duncan, against the enemies Sweno the king of Norway, Macdthwald lord of the western isles of Scotland and the thane of Cawdor who all are traitors. The battles were very bloody there were lots of dead people most very young soldiers. I have not seen so much blood scenic I became a general in Duncan’s army. The best thing was that we were victorious and Banquo and I are going home to celebrate our victory. On our way home across the heath the weather was awful there was strange thunder and lightning, Banquo and I meet 3 weird women who said that I am the thane of Glamass, going to be the thane of Cordor and future king to be. They also told Banquo that he will be lesser than me and greater, not so happy yet much happier and he shall father kings but he will not be king. Then they disappeared it was vary extraordinary. Than Ross and Angus arrived and told me that I am now the thane of Cordor. I don’t believe it how did they know perhaps king would come true. I must tell my wife about these weird women and what they have told me. I could not believe the welcome I got at the palace at fours from king Duncan, when he made Malcolm the prince of Cumberland and heir to the throne I was vary surprised, because I wanted to be king now it would be more difficult Duncan said that he will be coming to my castle, so set off. My wife was very anxious to tell me her plan for killing Duncan. I did not think I could do it, she was very determined that I should. Duncan had arrived I let my wife greet him because I very upset about killing Duncan. At the state dinner I had to leave I did not think that I could do it. My wife came and found me and I told her I could not do it she then convened me I should and told me how to kill him and she even told me how we should react when we hear the bad news about Duncan’s death. I was very nerves about killing Duncan because I was committing treason and a sin, on the way to Duncan’s chamber I saw Banquo and Flenance going to bed as I crossed the tort yard. Banquo gave me some gifts from Duncan for my wife and me, then Banquo about a dream he had about the weird women and some of predictions came true so I told him I not think about the weird women said. After they left I had worst hallucination that I saw a dagger with blood and I tort that I was going mad because it looked so real but I could not hold it. I heard the bell and went to Duncan’s camber, thing I remember is being back in my room covered with blood and holding a daggers, I know that I had killed Duncan in his sleep I can’t come to terms with what I have done my wife tried to calmed me down because I couldn’t go and put the daggers back so she had to, we heard banging so my wife took me to change my clothes and helped me wash the blood off me. Some how I had remember how to act when I heard the news of Duncan’s death that Macduff told me about. So I immediacy went to see what had happened and pretending to be angry I killed the guards so they could not be questioned about the murder. Lady Macbeth fainted saved me from being questioned further about the killing the guars.

Stefan’s Diaries: The Craving Chapter 27

There was nothing to indicate the passage of hours inside the windowless vault – not the barest suggestion of sunlight ever made its way under its doors. Days melted into weeks, maybe months. It felt as if an eternity had passed, and yet another stretched out endlessly before us. Lexi and I had stopped talking. Not out of anger or hopelessness, but just because we couldn't anymore. We didn't have enough strength to force ourselves to scream when we heard someone approach, much less get up and fight the stone that kept us buried. There was no more strength to fight the darkness, no strength to stand up. If I'd still required my heart to survive, I'm not sure I'd have had the strength to keep blood pumping through my veins. We lay silently next to each other. If anyone ever found us, a hundred years from then, we would look pathetic, like a sister and brother in some horrible fairy tale trapped in a witch's basement. Each passing second drained me of my Power. My eyes no longer parsed the darkness. The silence was absolute as sounds from the outside world faded into oblivion. All that I had left was my sense of touch – the feel of Lexi's waxy hand, the rough wood of the battered coffin next to me, the cool metal band of my useless ring. I felt almost human again, in the worst possible way. And as my Power retreated painfully, so with it went my immortality. I had never noticed its continual presence until it began to disappear, leaving meat and bone, brain and fluids, and taking away all that was supernatural about me with it. Except for my hunger. My vampire side reacted to starvation. My teeth ached and burned with need so badly that I would have shed tears if I'd had any. Blood weaseled its way into my every thought. I dreamed of how it had beaded up, jewel-like, on Callie's finger when she'd cut herself. How smoky my childhood crush, Clementine Haverford, had tasted going down. How, as my father lay dying on the floor of his study, his blood had spread out around him like greedy, searching fingers, staining everything in sight a dark, delicious red. In the end, everything comes back to blood. Vampires are nothing but hunger personified, designed expressly for the purpose of stealing blood from our victims. Our eyes compel them to trust us, our fangs rip open their veins, and our mouths drain them of their very life source. Blood†¦ Blood†¦ Blood†¦ Blood†¦ The word whispered to me over and over, like a song caught in one's head, filling every crevice of my brain and coating each memory with its tantalizing scent. And then a very familiar voice began to talk to me. â€Å"Hello, Stefan.† â€Å"Katherine?† I croaked, barely able to get the words out. I managed to turn my head just enough to see her sprawled voluptuously on a set of silk pillow cushions. She looked exactly as she had the night of the massacre, before they took her away and killed her. Beautiful and partially undressed, her pouty lips giving me a knowing smile. â€Å"Are you†¦ alive?† â€Å"Shhhh,† she said, leaning over to stroke my cheek. â€Å"You don't look well.† I closed my eyes as her intoxicating scent of lemon and ginger swept over me, so familiar and so real that I swooned. She must have fed recently because the heat from her skin burned in the cold tomb. â€Å"I wish I could help you,† she whispered, her lips close to mine. â€Å"Your. Fault,† I managed to breathe. â€Å"Oh, Stefan,† she scolded. â€Å"You may not have been as willing as your brother, but you didn't precisely object to my†¦ ministrations.† As if to emphasize her words, she leaned over and pressed her soft lips to my cheek. Again†¦ and again†¦ dragging them down my parched neck. Very, very delicately, she teased me, letting the tips of her fangs just puncture my skin. I moaned. My head spun. â€Å"But. You. Burned,† I rasped. â€Å"I saw the church.† â€Å"Do you wish me dead?† she asked, fire in her eyes. â€Å"Do you want me to burn, to collapse to the ground in a pile of ashes, simply because you can't have me all to yourself?† â€Å"No!† I protested, trying to push her off my neck. â€Å"Because you made me a monster†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Her laugh was light and melodic, like the wind chimes Mother had hung on the front porch of Veritas. â€Å"Monster? Really, Stefan, one day you will remember what you knew to be true back in New Orleans – that what I have given you is a gift, not a curse.† â€Å"You're as mad†¦ as†¦ Klaus†¦.† She sat back, alarm etching lines around her amber eyes. Her lower lip wobbled. â€Å"How do you know about K – ? â€Å" The crypt doors exploded into a thousand shards of stone and wood, as though shot through with a cannon. I covered my face, the light burning my eyes like acid. When I opened them again, Katherine was gone, and a blurry figure garbed in black wavered in the jagged doorway, haloed by the punishing light. â€Å"Klaus?† Lexi whispered in a terrified voice, clutching my hand. â€Å"Sorry to disappoint,† came a wry voice. â€Å"Damon!† I struggled to sit up. â€Å"Stefan, don't you think it's time you stopped just waiting around for your big brother to come and rescue you?† Without ceremony he reached in, grabbed my wrist, and flung me out of the crypt. I flew into the opposite wall and fell down into a heap on the marble floor. Damon was gentler with Lexi, though not by much. Another weightless corpse, she flopped against me, legs askew. Dust and shrapnel floated around us like fog. I blinked at the nondescript walls, trying to get my bearings. â€Å"Here,† Damon said, holding out a silver flask. â€Å"You're going to need it to escape.† I put my lips against the mouth of the vessel. Blood. Sweet, sweet, blood†¦ A voice in the back of my mind shouted that it was human blood, but I silenced it with a splash of heady liquid. I drank deeply, desperately, groaning when Damon grabbed the flask away from me. â€Å"Save some for the lady,† he said. Lexi drank greedily as well. Blood dripped down her chin and around her lips as she sucked hard and silently. Her skin, which had been drawn, pale and wrinkled as an old woman's, filled out and became pink and puffy. â€Å"Thanks, sailor,† she breathed. â€Å"I needed that.† Like a lamp filling a cellar with heat and light, I felt my own Power radiate through my limbs, returning my senses to what they were, imbuing my body with strength that I hadn't experienced since before I started eating only animals. As my vision cleared, I gasped. Behind Damon, a black-haired woman stood with one hand to her temple, the other gripped into a fist at her side. Her eyes were closed and her body shook with the slightest of tremors. It looked like she was in deep pain, being held in place while unknown tortures were applied to her mind and body. Margaret. And she wasn't alone. There was a prone figure in front of her, writhing in pain, and I realized with a jolt that Margaret wasn't being tortured – she was the one inflicting pain in another. In Lucius. In the super-vampire, so Powerful, yet still only a foot soldier of Klaus, the demon directly descended from hell. Lucius had murdered an entire family, captured me with ease, and caught Lexi like a troublesome mouse. The monster had his head in his hands and was screaming, terrible screams that seemed to send reverberations through the very chapel. â€Å"Is that Margaret?† I asked, dumbfounded. Damon pulled me up, propelled me toward the door. â€Å"We can't leave her!† â€Å"She'll be fine!† â€Å"But – â€Å" â€Å"Questions later. Running now.† And so, with one last look at the woman who had brought Hell itself to its knees, I ran away from the site of my imprisonment and out into moonlight.

Major Organizational institutions Essay

The major international organizations were all formed under one consensus developed by various countries. Each organization was created to fit a specific purpose, but they all follow a unique passion towards socio-economic stability on a global front, better governance, financial transparency, and respect for human rights (Karns, 2004). The organizations discussed in this paper are as follows: 1. International Monetary Fund 2. World Trade Organization 3. United Nations 4. Interpol 5. European Union The International Monetary Fund was created in 1944 with the sole objective of stabilizing exchange rates and the international monetary system. It consists of approximately 185 member countries. The structural hierarchy is topped by a managing director who is selected by executive directors representing various countries. The World Trade Organization was created in 1995 with the objective of liberalization international trade with checks and balances. Consisting of 153 members that constitute 95% of the total world trade, it is governed by a Ministerial Conference, which meets every two years and also appoints the head, the Director General. The WTO is further divided into the General council which deals with day to day affairs and policy decisions. The United Nations was first accepted by the world community through ratification in 1945. Comprising of 6 units ; The General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Secretariat and the International Court of Justice, the UN’s main aim is to facilitate co-operation in the fields of international justice, international law, international security, global economic development, the reduction of poverty and in the end, sustaining world peace. Interpol was created to develop international police co-operation between various countries. The organization is headed by a Secretary General and is governed by the Interpol General Assembly. Its underlying principle relies on the fact that Interpol facilitates information between member countries regarding drug trafficking, organized crime, weapon smuggling and so forth. Interpol cannot get political and thus remains a neutral organization. Its constitution forbids it to act between issues overlapping two member states regarding military, political or religious issues. The European Union constitutes 3 organizations. These include; European Economic Community, European Coal and Steel Community, and the European Atomic Energy Community. The European Union is composed of various states from Europe, thus making it a regional yet international organization. The European Union acts as one country with one currency (with the exception of United Kingdom) and a single trade policy (McCormick, 2005). In terms of economic development, the united nations development program deals entirely with facilitating resources to poorer countries and helping them develop on the agenda that the current first world nations used. The UNDP provides economic assistance, a variety of policy adjustments and macroeconomic stability programs to impoverished nations requiring aid. The International monetary fund further helps poor countries recover from fiscal debt that Governments accumulate. This helps Governments mitigate their financial and economic needs on a short term immediate basis. Countries suffering from bankruptcy often avail the IMF last fund sponsor program which allows them to borrow from the IMF. The IMF then acts as the lender to the country in need, state bank. The World Trade Organization was one of the first international organizations to spread the globalization bubble. Its view was to see the whole world as one single market and thus eliminate all barriers to trade. The reason being value of competition, low production costs and specialization in country specific production processes to increase quality of goods produced for everyone. The World Trade Organization promotes free and unrestricted trade by doing away with protectionist policies. This means that the WTO and its member countries trade freely with each other without quotas and restrictions. However, unfortunately that has not always been the case in the world market, as many developing countries seek to protect their infant industries. However, with time, the WTO has introduced a set of new policies which force member countries to be receptive to foreign competition in the hope of creating a more effective and efficient way of production that benefits all of mankind. The WTO functions under the ideology of capitalism hoping that with increased open trade, wealth will be created which will trickle down to the masses (Bossche, 2008). Terrorism, war crimes and international order has become a major issue in the rapidly changing world scenario. With continuous major war being fought in various parts of the world during the past 9 years, various new global organizations have come about to ensure the stability of peace. The United Nations, since 1945 has played an active role in these scenarios through one of its organs; the United Nations Security Council. Representing 5 major powers, Russia, United States, China, France and United Kingdom, the UN Security Council tackles global terrorism through sanctions and banning groups forcing member nations to act upon the rebel groups creating problems. Sanctions are slapped against nations abusing their force or subduing other nations in their thirst for power. To ensure neutrality and consensus, all 5 members on the council have the right to veto any resolution passed in the Security Council. This task is further augmented by Interpol which provides co-ordination between the different police forces of the member states. Interpol often issues international warrants for terrorist wanted by different states residing in other states. This allows for a more coordinated effort towards sustaining international order and keeping track of problems facing different nations such as arms smuggling, drug smuggling and human trafficking (Dana, 2000). The United Nations also has an International Court of Justice where various ousted political leaders are tried fairly for the crimes they committed against humanity, their people and other sovereign states. This court of justice ensures that war crimes do not go unpunished and are globally recognized by all member states (Roberts, 1994). One of the main organizations that undertake in capital investment is the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The OECD brings together various governments in order to provide sustainable development plans that various countries can use to break free from their economic turmoil. It also ensures the steady and sustainable flow of Human Capital Investment throughout the world. Raising living standards, maintaining financial stability and assisting other world economies through contributing in terms of intellect and physical economic strength is also part of the OECD mission. The future prospects for International Organizations are quite diverse when we observe the trends various organizations have seen over the past few years. With the dramatically changed global environment and thought process, a lot of organizations built on previous assumptions require change if they are to have any future prospects at all. The sudden shift to environmental change and the necessity to preserve our planet has put the focus of many governments, NGO’s and the majority of the population on Earth to shift their attention towards organizations that currently cater to this mind set. Environment change is being view increasingly as a step towards destruction man takes every day. When we talk about governance by such organizations, the prospects look constructive. Most people are turning towards such organizations because it caters to their â€Å"living green† ideology. This ideology is now engulfing our everyday life in the form of new foreign policies, industrial growth and development, and everyday management affairs ranging from the construction of roads to the syllabi of educational institutes. Day by day, companies adopt eco-friendly governance policies because that is what the people want and respect (Karns, 2004). Secondly, we have seen the failure of the United Nations once again. The International Court of Justice at max provides advice, the Security Council is tainted with bias behavior from certain states towards their allies and the resolutions tabled are often rejected on the basis of the veto vote. It is, without a doubt, an emerging thought, that governance by such organizations that police some and free others do not work. Thus, to think that such organizations can bring about global governance is mistaken. People have lost faith in such organizations and more people are doing so day by day. Finally, international monetary institutions and development support agencies are being shunned by developing countries to an alarming success. The false paradigm theory has broken away the countries that were once colonized. They now feel that imperial colonialism has now over-ridden their way of life and these international bodies promote it. Also, the fact that the policies and governance techniques these organizations offer are barely equip to deal with the problems threatening the developing nations of today. They might be well intended but fail to address the ailments of development countries. IMF policies and World Bank regulations are seen more as restrictions rather than good governance techniques to bring economies out of debt. Thus, their policies are often ignored. To presume that good governance can be bought through such international organizations only highlights the weak prospects that such organizations have in global governance when it comes to economic stability.
